Ordinarily, I’m silent on Sundays, but I wanted to make an exception today.
I wouldn’t be who I am without the many people who in my life who love me, and this is a special post dedicated to one of my biggest influencers: my dad.
It is he who first introduced me to photography, teaching me the basics of light, exposure, movement, and composition on his now ancient camera (yes, I believe he still has it). He provided guidance while out and about, stressing the importance of making what I take something I, myself, want to look at.
My father’s adventurous spirit was (and is) contagious. Constantly yearning for new hikes and exploration, I discovered a love for the outdoors, rich with subjects to nurture my growing addiction for photography.
He also exposed me to some very unique experiences, pushing me to challenge the world around me. I credit my ability to see unusual things in everyday life to this conditioning. We lived overseas, and this sparked a love for travel and opened my eyes to the myriad ways of seeing the world.
And he inspired me with his enthusiasm for taking advantage of every opportunity and living life by the mantra of “no regrets.” At our wedding, he told of how I blaze my own path, intentionally going against the mundane, expected, and common. What he didn’t know at the time was that by bringing this to my attention, he merely fueled within me a desire to fulfill that description even more fervently. I now do anything within my power to stand out as unique and individual, especially behind the camera.
Thanks, Dad, for shaping me into the person I am today.
How did your father impact your life?
