Guess what?? I finally met my goal of actually posting 7 pictures this week! I’m getting into a better groove for these things. I like the new wildlife focus on my Instagram account, and I love sharing my best work on 500px.
This first one was from my first foray into backpacking. I joined some of my photo buddies in a bush plane that whisked us to the Alaskan backwoods. There, we hiked over 20 miles along the beach in search of bears. Along the way, we espied this majestic creature. We ended up seeing another eagle much closer – actually in our camp. It was an unforgettable experience. You can read about the entire journey here.
Next, this subject was much closer. While walking along the Tilikum Bridge in Portland, I noticed each crossbeam was adorned with these dewy strands. It was so picturesque, especially with the eerie fog as a backdrop. What tiny details have you noticed today?
I love this next picture, because it’s such a simple display of tentative new growth. This is a Japanese maple under which I pass on a daily basis. This is one of my favorite kinds of trees, and I marvel at witnessing each of its distinctive phases throughout the year. These signs of tiny beginnings fill me with hope for a future as yet unwritten.
From local to distant, this road can be found in Mesa Verde National Park. I dragged my dad out of bed early enough to catch the sunrise on the amazing cliff dwelling ruins there, but we were dismayed to find gates barring our way. So instead, we wandered up the road where other lesser sites could be found atop the mesa. The colors of that desert sky were so beautiful in their pastel bands. You can read about that adventure here.
Next, this lovely little turtle. This guy was just chilling in a tide pool at Two Step in Hawaii. He blended right in, so few even noticed he was there; I almost missed him entirely. But this contained and still subject made for an excellent test of my new underwater casing. Check out the stories and pictures from that tropical day here.
Down to the last two, it was a toss-up. Look at that sky! I couldn’t get enough of the fire illuminating the heavens that evening at McKenzie Pass. And the silhouette here captures the individual photographers perched all along the old observatory there. This is just a fun image. We later stuck around for the Milky Way, and the clouds fortunately parted for us to have a great view. I’ve played with this image before, combining this with the later Milky Way shot. You can see that here.
Finally, my favorite image this week is from our trip to Vancouver B.C. We rode our bikes all along this waterfront, and I enjoyed photographing these gulls. The city was a shining spectacle, and those clouds really drew it all together. The Pacific Northwest is a truly beautiful place.
