I'm traveling! See the latest at www.bigtinyworld.com!

A visit to Zion National Park often comes with seeking out the iconic shot of The Watchman.  Generally viewed from atop the Canyon Junction Bridge, I wanted to (excuse the pun) shoot for something different.  I love getting close to my foreground so I can make full use of my wide angle, so I ventured down to the riverside.

However, I risked being in the shots of all the photographers up on the bridge (and there were many!).  In the end, I hid behind a bush and tried to stick to the far side of boulders.

A family with two kids came down to the beach to pose for pictures anyway… and some guy in an obnoxious orange jacket spoiled the view for a little while… so I suppose I was the least of their worries.

I was quite attached to my little spot by the river.  I liked the composition of the trees and the motion-blurred water.

And as the sun set, The Watchman glowed a brilliant orange, looking like something from out of this world.  Were it not for the trees, I could believe this to be a scene from Mars.

No, I did not get the “iconic” shot from the bridge, but I’m ok with that.  I’d rather (again, pun incoming!) focus on a vantage that’s slightly more unique.  I’m happy with my shots.

Darkness crept in, and we started to think about the Milky Way.  But it was cold, and we were tired, so we decided against it.  I have also since read that there are other good vantages of this majestic landmark, so I’d love to explore those on our next trip.

Have you been to Zion?  What are your favorite sunset spots?

I’m only just starting in on pictures from our trip to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon – I have so much to share!  Follow my blog for all the latest updates on the full adventure!
